The Real “Man Up!” (The World is Wrong)

Disclaimer: If you don’t call Jesus your Lord, these posts aren’t for you.

Mans Identity in Christ:

Manhood started in the garden. God created man and women and it was good. It was a perfect union in God’s design. A glorifying display of God’s creativity and love. But we rebelled and our “good” was gone. We must always have the right perspective of ourselves. We are filthy sinners, deserving God’s wrath and our only good is in Christ Jesus. In him, we are made clean and righteous. The only thing we bring to the table is sin that needs forgiveness.

What’s the first thing you think of when you think of a man?

What the world tells us a man is:

Has a career, Good with the ladies, Can fight, Physically strong, Doesn’t take crap from anyone, Is respected by all, Confident, Passionate, Can fix a car, or other handy work, In control of any situation, Loner, a cool guy. Etc, the empty list goes on and on. These are just a few examples.

I’m sure some guys are saying:

So what if I’m not, all this stuff? What if I can’t do all those things? Then am I, not a man? Sadly most young men will strive their whole life to live up to the world’s standard of being a man, all the while they’re running towards false manhood. I’m sure even some of you ladies and guys perked up as you read that list. It’s empowering to the masculine nature and its what girls have been conditioned to believe that that’s what they want in a man. The list I read was completely worthless. Some of them are good for a man to do or know how to do, but none of it is defining you as a man. The only thing that can and should define your manhood is found in Christ. That’s all you should be seeking.

Just like everything else in this life that God has given us as a blessing, the world perverts and uses it for evil.

-Strength (Abuse) God has made men physically strong. Men have taken that strength and used it for evil.

-Sex (Porn) The gift of sex in a marriage of a man and a woman has been perverted. Sex is the only sin you commit against yourself. Porn is the biggest false manhood available. This is why it’s so dangerous.

-Leadership (Evil rulers) You give a man too much power and evil follows.

-Money (Everything) By everything, I mean everything. If you love money, you are a slave to it and will do anything to get more of it.

There’s plenty of other examples. These were a couple.

When we take a secular view of what our gender roles are, you see that all of its benefits are found, in this world, in this lifetime. Everything the world values is fleeting, nothing eternal or worth anything. God’s whole purpose for us is eternal. He has the perfect eternal perspective. The character he’s developing in us and laws on how we ought to live is getting us ready to enjoy Him forever. That’s all that really matters. Our holiness, which brings Him the most glory. That eternal perspective, as we learn more about our gender roles, always keep in mind the most important thing is our holiness. Our sanctification. We all have the same call. Male or female. Our roles in his design, when lived out, brings the most glory to Him. That’s His main concern, so should it be ours too.

So what does being a man look like in scripture?

What a man of God looks like:

True men are those you gladly take on sacrificial responsibility, to the glory of God.

Where we should be giving of ourselves:

Families (Church and Home)

Community (Neighbors)

Country (Needs of the nation)

Yourself (Your health plays a huge part in how you’re able to help others)

Jesus as a man is our strive:

Often Jesus is portrayed a weak. The paintings of him, scenes of the cross etc. He often looks like a dainty little man that had no backbone. Although Jesus was meek, lowly and humble. That same Jesus also obeyed His Father in everything, even to death and went on a rampage cleaning the temple for His Fathers glory. Christ is what we men should be striving for every day. Think about Jesus, even just in the human sense. We all know Jesus was a carpenter. Carpentry, even today isn’t an easy job. No wimps allowed. You can only imagine then, how much more labor it would have taken. Everything by hand and backbone. No fancy tools like now. They did it all by hand. Jesus was manly, even in a worldly sense.

Where does our lost identity as men start from?

First of all, there’s the fall. Adam cursed us from the start and we’ve been battling ourselves ever since. A slave to our desires. The lack of a father in the home would be a big reason why manhood is lost. Even if he was there, he was absent from leading the home, and you, into manhood. This is one of satans greatest works. Raising generations of men that can’t raise men to take the proper man role, which leads this world to chaos. But we can change that, you and me, one family at a time. We need to strive as we grow in Christ, to not only concern ourselves with our future families, but our surrounding life now. God has given us people right now to minister to, to help them find their identity in Christ. Everything you do today will affect the way you lead tomorrow. Take what God has given you today, the people you are around and lead them as you would your family. Even if that only means being the best employee, student, mentor, church servant, child to your parents, etc. There’s no place or time you can take a break from glorifying God and living as he’s called you to live.

You will be your families:

Protector– Duet 20:7-8, 24:5

Provider– 1 Tim 5:8

Prophet– Duet 6:6-7, Eph 5:26, 6:4

Priest– 2 Tim 1:3

I am responsible for going before God on my families behalf. I will be held responsible for my families success or lack of.

Before you can even begin this you must:

First, you need to know if you’re really a Christian (2 Cor 13:5)

Work out your salvation (Phil 2:12, Heb 12:14)

Read and know your bible (Heb 5:11-14)

Be taught by older men (Prov 1:1-7)

Seek to teach younger men (2 Tim 2:2)

(All this isn’t even possible without being having a church family. Serving and blessing one another)

Acts 20:24:

But I do not account my life of any value nor precious to myself, if only I may finish my course and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus Christ, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God.

This is all who call Jesus, God, our driving goal in life. Our only boast is in Christ.

Our roles as men and women are still not as important as our roles as Christians.

What about the single mom, playing both roles of mom and dad. Does this make her less of a woman? Or a single dad being mom and dad, Does that make him less of a man because he has to pull some of the female roles in the home and in life in general? NOT AT ALL! Our roles and identity in our gender is important, but not as important as our identity in Christ. That role looks the same for all of us. We repent, turn and follow. We die to self to live to Christ. We make other believers, we serve our church and grow in our faith. Glorifying God in all we do. That’s the role of all who follow Christ. And the mission is to make other believers! If we could live out our roles with full confidence, we would be able to worship God deeper than ever.

The world’s view of what a real man looks like will perish along with it. Stick to the scriptures and follow the only real perfect man’s example, Jesus Christ. We can not let God’s perfect design in our roles as men and women be perverted because the world says their way is the right way. God doesn’t make mistakes. There are no accidents. God is in control of everything, all the time. Therefore, we obey his perfect will in our lives and our roles in gender and our roles as Christians. Take up your cross and walk in God’s task for you today.

And men, Gladly take on sacrificial responsibility, to the glory of God.

Please don’t let my word be the final word on this. Pick up the Bible, read Gospel-saturated books by good authors, read good commentaries on the Bible, pick up Wayne Grudem’s “Systematic Theology”, read the 1689 London Baptist confession of faith and learn from a man’s lifetime of study and meditation on the Word of God. Most of all, trust in Jesus Christ and know what He has given us is whole, perfect and is for our good and His glory. Love you all!

The grace of the Lord Jesus be with all. Amen.
