Ephesians 6 (Full Armor of God)

By S.C. Shaw

This was taken from a sermon I gave.

Ephesians 6

Put on the full armor of God.

1 Corinthians 10:21

You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons. You cannot partake of the table of the Lord and the table of demons.

-How do I live a life surrendered to Christ?

Our battle is not physical. There’s a war going on around us and our fight is to stand in the truth & strength of Christ. We have no power without Christ to battle against the enemy. You cannot stand alone. Your only chance is standing in the gospel. Fully equip yourself with God’s word. Daily putting on truth, righteousness & readiness given by the gospel of peace. Protect yourself with truth by guarding the enemies lies. Protecting every part of you with the washing of the word. (When you jump in the water, there’s not a part of you that isn’t wet. That’s how consumed we should be by the truth of Christ. Praying at all times in the spirit, humbly & fiercely, not just for yourself but thinking of your brothers and sisters in the faith.

This walk is so much bigger than you!… God wants to use YOU to help others.

Start thinking of equipping yourself to protect others. When you are prepared, you can help others. We are in a real battle. We need real equipment.

Ephesians 6

Protective armor:

-Belt of truth- Holds our armor in place. This isn’t the belt that holds the sword. We never put away our sword. This is something under our armor. Not seen but so important.

Psalm 86:11 Teach me your ways O Lord that I may live according to your truth. Unite my heart to fear your name.

We should pray this every day, over and over again.

-Breastplate- Allows you to boldly stand in truth & for truth. Safe from attack. Protects front and back

-Shoes- Allows us to walk freely and boldly.

-Shield-  Able to protect the whole body. Able to block all. It’s the Promises of God. Always meditate on the things of Christ. Psalm 18:30 As for God, his way is perfect, the word of the Lord is flawless. He is a shield for all who take refuge in him. Faith is our shield.

-Helmet- Which is salvation. Everything starts in the mind. Satan’s main point of attack. The helmet will protect the lies coming in, as well as doubts or our salvation.

Our Offense:

-Sword- We aren’t left defenseless. We have the most powerful weapon. GOD’S WORD! The very bible we often neglect to read is our only but most power weapon/tool of all our armor. Our weapon of offense is to share the gospel…

-Pray at all times in all things giving no foothold for the enemy. Notice how prayer has no armor imagery. There is no equal comparison. Prayer covers all. Paul wants his readers to understand that prayer is foundational for the deployment of all other weapons. The battle doesn’t end, the prayers shouldn’t either. The enemy is never resting. Neither should our prayer and walk with Christ.

The full armor of God is not simply “God approved equipment, but the very armor God, the Messiah, which is given to us to fight this battle.

Paul wants his readers to know that this is a real battle. We must fight and fight now. Today and every day, all day. But we aren’t left alone. In fact, we can do nothing on our own.

Satan is the one who desires for us to fail and will work towards that end. The enemy never rests. So much more should our preparation to defend and fight to protect ourselves and others.

I thought this was fun to group some verses together with the Eph verses. Hopefully, it makes sense.

Psalm 86:11

Teach me your way O Lord that I may walk in your truth, unite my heart to fear your name.

Eph 6:12

For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood but against the rulers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.

1 Cor 10:21

You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons. You cannot partake of the table of the Lord and the table of demons.

Eph 6:13

Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all to stand firm.

Romans 8:5-8

For those who live according to the flesh, set their minds on things of the flesh, but those who live according to the spirit set their minds on things of the spirit.

Eph 6:14-17

Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness and as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one.

Romans 12:12

Do not be conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that by testing, you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

Eph 18

Praying at all times in the spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints.

Romans 13:12 & 14

So then let us cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light. But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.

God has given us more than we deserve or could ever want. We must act and receive these gifts. Use every day as a God-given opportunity to spread the truth of Christ to all people around you. Get over yourself and under the Cross.

Joshua 1:9

Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified, do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.

Please don’t let my word be the final word on this. Pick up the Bible, read Gospel-saturated books by good authors, read good commentaries on the Bible, pick up Wayne Grudem’s “Systematic Theology”, read the 1689 London Baptist confession of faith and learn from a man’s lifetime of study and meditation on the Word of God. Most of all, trust in Jesus Christ and know what He has given us is whole, perfect and is for our good and His glory. Love you all!

The grace of the Lord Jesus be with all. Amen.
