Ephesians 2:1-10 (By Grace Through Faith)

By S.C. Shaw

I broke up the verses for this passage so I could explain it better.

Ephesians 2

And you were dead in the trespasses and sins in which you once walked, following the course of this world, (Speaking of followers of Christ now being a new creation)

following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience (Talking Satan. If you are not under God’s sovereign grace then you are under Satan’s influence)

among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, (We all start in the same place. Wicked sinners under the wrath of God)

carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind. (We did whatever we wanted with no regard to God. Like the verse says “By nature children of wrath. That’s not a light statement. That’s when we are apart from following Christ)

(The Good news!)

But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (All this can sound overwhelming until the Good news comes(Jesus). He gave us a way out of our rebellion. But we half to turn and change. Not by our power but by the power of Christ in us)

by grace you have been saved (We have done nothing to earn and can never do anything to earn salvation. It’s by the grace of God that we are saved)

and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, (The Good news just keeps coming. Not only has He saved us from ourselves and His wrath, but He has promised us eternal life with Him)

so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. (When eternity comes, we will, even more, begin to understand the greatness of God. We will see just how much He has actually saved us)

For by grace you have been saved through faith. (We have done nothing to earn our salvation BUT, have must faith in Him. Having faith that He has given us. Which shows His grace even more to us. Why has He chosen me? Because He does whatever He pleases)

And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. (A gift. All you have to do is accept it. Then the transformation begins. As you become more like Jesus every day. How? Because you desire it because you are following Him fully and wholly. Because you are thirsty for His word and can’t get enough of it. You desire what you ran from previously and run from what you desired. All to the glory of God)

For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. (You don’t earn your salvation. But your work is not done when you say a nice prayer. The right prayer is good and important but that’s the beginning of the race. God has created you for His purposes. He has saved you for His glory. And He will use you to bring more of His chosen people to Him.)

There’s no such thing as a “lone ranger Christian.” There’s no such thing as a one-time salvation experience. It’s a lifelong death to self and life through Christ. Nothing less than full and complete envelopment in the things of God. Not as to earn your spot in heaven but as to respond to the mercy that God has shown you. What does that mean? That there is a price that has been paid for your sin. Not by you. By the One who created you. We can’t repay it but we must live through it. Romans 8:16-17 “The Spirit bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children then heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.

God is good and we are not. Thank You, Jesus for saving us!

Please don’t let my word be the final word on this. Pick up the Bible, read Gospel-saturated books by good authors, read good commentaries on the Bible, pick up Wayne Grudem’s “Systematic Theology”, read the 1689 London Baptist confession of faith and learn from a man’s lifetime of study and meditation on the Word of God. Most of all, trust in Jesus Christ and know what He has given us is whole, perfect and is for our good and His glory. Love you all!

The grace of the Lord Jesus be with all. Amen.
