Romans 8:1-11 (Life in the Spirit)

By S.C. Shaw

A simple breakdown of some very meaty scripture.

Romans 8:1-11 (ESV) Life in the Spirit

“There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death. For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God’s law; indeed, it cannot. Those who are in the flesh cannot please God.

You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact, the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness.  If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.”

1. There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. (You have been saved by Jesus death on the cross if you follow Him.)

2. For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death. (The law referring to the Old Testament law that God laid out for His believers. Law that proved man could not keep His laws at all. This law was still grace and gift from God because He desired to be with His people and He was actually giving them insight to His heart and desire for His people. But the law of the Spirit of life is the New Testament freedom from the old law. God supplying us salvation in Jesus)

For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, (God saw that we are a weak sinful people and knew we needed saving because the only other option was death. He has every right to wipe us out, but God is good. So Jesus came to our rescue to be the propitiation for us. He took the wrath that we deserve to satisfy Gods righteous judgment. Jesus became our sin and us His righteousness)

in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. (Jesus becomes our sin and we become Jesus’ righteousness, those who follow him and not the world. Following the world simply means following your heart. Doing whatever you want to do which people mistakingly call being free when in fact is the definition of being a slave to your own desires)

For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. (When you are transformed by Christ, you no longer long for what the world has to offer. We are evil by nature so its a daily battle but we completely rely on Jesus and are satisfied in Him alone)

For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. (The worlds pleasures are empty and dead. Life in Christ is joy and peace, with an everlasting life awaiting us. Plus, the rewards for living in the Spirit are not in this world for eternity to come)

For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God’s law; indeed, it cannot. (By our own efforts we cannot do anything to please God. Not only can we not please God but we hate God when we are living without His Spirit in us. You might not think you hate God but just the way you live and sins you commit without knowing it is hostile to God. Even the “good works” that outwardly look good are displeasing to Him because they are not done with a heart to glorify God in them)

Those who are in the flesh cannot please God. (Without the righteousness of Jesus, God only sees our wickedness and judgment it deserves)

You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact, the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. (This isn’t a one-time “sinners prayer” kind of thing. This is a life dedicated to fully and completely living to glorify God. Not your happiness and comfort. But being satisfied with Christ and being holy through what Christ has done. Anything less is “playing Christian”)

10 But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness. (Think of yourself as actually dead without Christ. The only life you have is with Christ. If you refuse Him, then death is all you have and it’s your choice)

11 If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you. (God’s coming back one day. And His chosen people are going to be raised up with Him for eternity. And judgment is awaiting the rest. But before that sounds too harsh, remember, we get what we ask for. We want God, we get God. We want nothing to do with Him, He’s not going to force you)

Read the rest of Romans 8. Super helpful and don’t hesitate to contact me with any questions.

Closing.

Please don’t let my word be the final word on this. Pick up the Bible, read Gospel-saturated books by good authors, read good commentaries on the Bible, pick up Wayne Grudem’s “Systematic Theology”, read the 1689 London Baptist confession of faith and learn from a man’s lifetime of study and meditation on the Word of God. Most of all, trust in Jesus Christ and know what He has given us is whole, perfect and is for our good and His glory. Love you all!

The grace of the Lord Jesus be with all. Amen.
