Ephesians 2:1-10 (By Grace Through Faith)

By Steven Shaw

I broke up the verses for this passage so I could explain it better.

Ephesians 2

And you were dead in the trespasses and sins in which you once walked, following the course of this world, (Speaking of followers of Christ now being a new creation)

following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience (Talking Satan. If you are not under God’s sovereign grace then you are under Satan’s influence)

among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, (We all start in the same place. Wicked sinners under the wrath of God)

carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind. (We did what ever we wanted with no regard to God. Like the verse says “By nature children of wrath. That’s not a light statement. That’s when we are apart from following Christ)

(The Good news!)

But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (All this can sound overwhelming until the Good news comes(Jesus). He gave us a way out of our rebellion. But we half to turn and change. Not by our power but by the power of Christ in us)

by grace you have been saved (We have done nothing to earn and can never do anything to earn salvation. It’s by the grace of God that we are saved)

and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, (The Good news just keeps coming. Not only has He saved us from ourselves and His wrath, but He has promised us eternal life with Him)

so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.(When eternity comes, we will even more begin to understand the greatness of God. We will see just how much He has actually saved us)

For by grace you have been saved through faith. (We have done nothing to earn our salvation BUT, have must faith in Him. Having faith that He has given us. Which shows His grace even more to us. Why has He chosen me? Because He does what ever He pleases)

And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. (A gift. All you have to do is accept it. Then the transformation begins. As you become more like Jesus everyday. How? Because you desire it because you are following Him fully and wholly. Because you are thirsty for His word and can’t get enough of it. You desire what you ran from previously and run from what you desired. All to the glory of God)

For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. (You don’t earn your salvation. But your work is not done when you say a nice prayer. The right prayer is good and important but that’s the beginning of the race. God has created you for His purposes. He has saved you for His glory. And He will use you to bring more of His chosen people to Him.)

Continued:

There’s no such thing as a “lone ranger Christian.” There’s no such thing as a one time salvation experience. It’s a life long death to self and life though Christ. Nothing less than full and complete envelopment in the things of God. Not as to earn your spot in heaven but as to respond to the mercy that God has shown you. What does that mean? That there is a price that has been paid for your sin. Not by you. By the One whom created you. We can’t repay it but we must live through it. Romans 8:16-17 “The Spirit bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children then heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.

God is good and we are not. Thank you Jesus for saving us!

Please don’t let my word be the final word on this. Pick up the bible, read Gospel saturated books by good authors, read commentaries on the bible, pick up Wayne Grudem’s “Systematic Theology” and learn from a man’s lifetime of study and meditation on the Word of God. Most of all, trust in Jesus Christ and know what He has given us is whole, perfect and is for our good and his glory. Love you all!

The grace of the Lord Jesus be with all. Amen.

Romans 8:1-11 (Life in the Spirit)

By Steven Shaw

Romans 8:1-11 Life in the Spirit

1. There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. (You have been saved by Jesus death on the cross if you follow Him.)

2. For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death. (The law referring to the Old Testament law that God laid out for His believers. Law that proved man could not keep His laws at all. But the law of the Spirit of life is the New Testament freedom from the old law. God supplying us salvation)

For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, (God saw that we are a weak sinful nature and knew we needed saving instead of death. He has every right to wipe us out, but God is good. So Jesus came to our rescue to be the propitiation for us. He took the wrath that we deserve to satisfy Gods righteous judgement. Jesus became our sin)

in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. (Jesus becomes our sin and we become Jesus’ righteousness, those who follow him and not the world)

For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. (When you are transformed by Christ, you no longer long for what the world has to offer. We are evil by nature so its a daily battle but we completely rely on Jesus and are satisfied in Him)

For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. (The worlds pleasures are empty and dead. Life in Christ is joy and peace, with an everlasting life awaiting us)

For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God’s law; indeed, it cannot. (By our own efforts we cannot do anything to please God. Not only can we not but we hate God when we are living without His Spirit in us. You might not think you hate God but just the way you live and sins you commit without knowing it, is hostile to God)

Those who are in the flesh cannot please God. (Without the righteousness of Jesus, God only sees our wickedness and judgment it deserves)

You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. (This isn’t a one time “sinners prayer” kind of thing. This is a life dedicated to fully and completely living to glorify God. Not your happiness and comfort. But being satisfied with Christ and being holy through Christ. Anything less is “playing christian” and you do not have the Holy Spirit in you)

10 But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness. (Think of yourself as actually dead. The only life you have is with Christ. If you refuse Him, then death is all you have)

11 If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you. (God’s coming back one day. And His chosen people are going to be raised up with Him for eternity. And judgment is awaiting the rest)
